Component defaults pre-select the Material, Machine, Labor, or Modifier values that appear when you add a Product to an Estimate or Order. You set these defaults on the Product in Linked Components.
When a Component offers more than one choice, a default gives your team a starting value. They can still change the selection on the Line Item.

Important Information
- Defaults apply when you add a new Line Item. Existing Estimates and Orders keep the values already selected on those Line Items.
- A Component must be linked before you can assign a default. If a Labor row shows Unlinked, link a Labor first.
- Assembly Defaults in Product Settings set starting size and option values, such as Width and Height. They are separate from Default Material, Default Machine, and Default Labor in Linked Components.
- After you click Done in the Edit dialog, click Save on the Product to keep the change.
Understanding Component Defaults
The Linked Components panel lists each Component on the Product and shows how it is configured.
a. The Material row lists the linked Materials. When more than one Material is linked, the row shows Multiple Choices.
b. The Labor row. If this row shows Unlinked, a Default Labor is not available until a Labor is linked.
c. The Machine row. When a Default Machine is assigned, the Machine name appears on this row (for example, Roll Stock Printer 2.15).
d. Each Modifier row shows the Modifier that is added with the Product.
Setting a Default Material
A Default Material is optional. Use it when the Product has more than one linked Material and one of those Materials is used most often.
Navigate to System Settings / Components / Products & Modifiers.
1. Select the Product.
2. Click the Linked Components card.
3. Click the Edit icon on the Material Component.
The Edit Material dialog is where you choose the Default Material from the Materials already linked to the Product.
a. Single Material / Multiple Materials controls whether one Material or a list of Materials is available on the Sales Form.
b. FILTER BY MATERIAL CATEGORIES limits which Materials can be linked.
c. LINKED MATERIALS are the Materials that appear as choices on the Sales Form.
d. DEFAULT MATERIAL is the Material that is selected when the Product is added to an Estimate or Order.
4. Click Done.
5. Click Save.
Setting a Default Machine
A Default Machine is recommended for each Product that uses a Machine. Open the Product and the Linked Components panel using the same path as Setting a Default Material.
1. Click the Edit icon on the Machine Component.
a. Single Machine / Multiple Machines controls whether one Machine or a list of Machines is available on the Sales Form.
b. LINKED MACHINES are the Machines that appear as choices on the Sales Form.
c. DEFAULT MACHINE is the Machine that is selected when the Product is added to an Estimate or Order.
2. Click Done.
3. Click Save.
Default Labor and Modifiers
Default Labor uses the same Linked Components panel and Edit dialog as Material and Machine.
- A Default Labor is recommended for each Product that uses Labor. Production is commonly used as the Default Labor.
- If the Labor row shows Unlinked, link a Labor before you assign a Default Labor. For more information, see Linked Components.
- For a Modifier, the Modifier you select in the Edit dialog is the value that is added with the Product.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Do Component defaults change Estimates and Orders that already exist?
Answer: No. Changing a default on the Product applies when you add a new Line Item. Line Items that are already on an Estimate or Order keep the Material, Machine, Labor, and Modifier values already selected.
2. Why is Default Labor unavailable?
Answer: Default Labor is available after a Labor is linked to the Product. If the Labor row in Linked Components shows Unlinked, link a Labor first, then set Default Labor.
3. Is a Default Material required?
Answer: No. A Default Material is optional. A Default Machine and Default Labor are recommended when the Product uses those Components.
4. What is the difference between Default Machine and Assembly Defaults?
Answer: Default Machine is set in Linked Components and pre-selects the Machine on the Sales Form. Assembly Defaults are set in Product Settings and pre-fill size and option values, such as Width and Height.
5. Can I change the default after the Product is added to an Estimate?
Answer: Yes. On the Line Item, select a different Material, Machine, Labor, or Modifier from that Component's dropdown. Changing the Product default does not overwrite the value already selected on that Line Item.
